✅ DO · the Mom Test rules
  • Ask about specific past behavior ("Walk me through last Tuesday")
  • Ask "why" 3 times in a row · go deeper than the first answer
  • Embrace silence · count to 5 after they finish · they'll add the gold
  • Mirror their words · "You said 'stuck' — what does stuck look like?"
  • Capture verbatim quotes word-for-word · matters for testimonials
  • Talk <20% of the time · you're listening, not teaching
❌ DON'T · the traps
  • Ask hypotheticals ("Would you pay $X for...?") · they lie to be nice
  • Pitch Cohort 2 mid-interview · you'll bias every answer after
  • Defend the program when they criticize · say "tell me more"
  • Leading questions ("Don't you think the deck was great?")
  • Fix things in real time · capture, don't act
  • Skip recording consent · get explicit "yes" upfront
🗣 Open + close scripts · memorize

OPEN (10 sec):
"Mind if I record this? Just for me — I'll use the transcript to make Cohort 2 better. Nothing gets shared publicly without your say-so. Cool?"

CLOSE (15 sec):
"Can I quote you on what you said about [X]? I'll send you the exact wording before publishing." → Get permission while it's WARM.

🧠 Probe lines · when they go vague
  • "Can you give me a specific example?"
  • "What does that actually look like day-to-day?"
  • "You said [X] · what do you mean by that?" (mirror)
  • "And why does that matter to you?" (the "5 whys")
  • "Tell me more about that." (the magic 4 words)
  • "What was the moment that hit hardest?"
  • If still vague → just wait. Silence is your friend.
